I understand that coconut oil is the golden child of the natural hair world, but I have a confession: coconut oil never did anythang positive for me OR my hair. My hair never felt moisturized, softer or saw any more growth when I used the oil as a part of my hair care regimen, but then I found the true, breakout star of my natural hair show, and the game has never been the same.
Enter avocado oil.
Avocado oil is a fattier oil than coconut oil and jam packed with additional vitamins, minerals and amino acids – think superfood for your hair. With more polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat than coconut oil, avocado oil packs a hard punch of extra shine, elasticity and overall strength of your strands. Avocado oil also does a far better job penetrating and soaking into your hair as a true moisturizer, rather than sitting on top and adding temporary shine. All-in-all, avocado oil is a much bigger value add for the health of your natural hair, and healthy hair is the fastest method for growing hair, y’all.
Adding Avocado Oil to your Natural Hair Regimen
I’ve definitely seen the tangible benefits of this liquid from the Gawds, and I’ve managed to incorporate avocado oil into every step of my hair care process via the following methods:
- Hot Oil Treatment. On Saturday mornings, I mix a number of oils together (avocado oil, castor oil and peppermint oil to name a few) as a weekly moisturizing treatment, and I sit with them on my hair under a heated cap for about an hour while I make breakfast or clean/organize around the apartment.
- Leave-in Conditioner. After I wash my hair, I apply leave in conditioner to my soaking wet hair and follow with a generous amount of avocado oil (before I apply any gel). This locks in the most moisture for me and gives my hair extra, long lasting shine and softness.
- Daily Moisturizer. I refresh my style each morning with a little bit of avocado oil for added moisture and shine. You can read more about my refresh routine here.
Avocado Oil Isn’t Just for the Ladies
Ps: ladies, do you love when yo mans has a full, healthy, shiny beard? If so, let boo know that avocado oil is also a secret weapon for the gentleman beard game as well. Bae has been as a daily moisturizer on his beard since October, and people will stop him on the street re: the health and look of his beard. I’m not saying, I’m just saying…
Best Brand of Avocado Oil for Natural Hair
One important caveat!! Not all avocado oils are made the same. My favorites have been Benissimo’s avocado oil (which is usually sold at Whole foods, but I’ve had a hard time finding in stores recently) and the Ottavio brand. Both are cold pressed, and I’m going to be honest, I have no idea what value that adds, BUT I do know that I’ve tried a few other brands (like Primal and Chosen Foods), and the avocado oil just would not soaking into my hair as well.
